Chabad's Living Library
"Learning to Transform"
The Vision:
Our vision is to provide individuals with the tools and opportunities to become aware of the vast and invaluable treasure that is our sacred Jewish heritage.
To provide the resources that help one develop a deeper understanding of the Torah and its teachings, as well as the Mitzvahs and practices that are central to Jewish life.
By exploring the rich meanings behind Shabbat and the Jewish holidays for example, one will inevitably uncover a new perspective on traditions that may have once seemed unfamiliar or even abstract. When one takes the time to understand the customs and their deeper significance, it can feel transformative, like discovering something that just clicks. At times almost feeling like "I wish I would've known".
It’s not just about following rules; it’s about tapping into a sense of purpose, finding deeper meaning in everyday moments, and experiencing a greater connection to yourself, your community, and the world around you.
One might conclude that the Torah and the Talmud, the Midrash and the Zohar, Rashi and Maimonides and so on, are not distant "irrelevant" texts reserved for the religiously inclined. Rather it becomes clear that they are indeed deeply relevant to daily life; they represent the very essence of the goodness we all seek in the world.
For example, teachings and guidance that promote emotional and psychological well-being are grounded in the Divine wisdom that flows through every part of the Torah.
Life’s fundamental issues such as the transformative power of family, marriage advice, raising healthy children, understanding business and partnerships, making mindful food choices, and insights into science, astronomy, cosmology, biology, and so much more are all addressed within the vast expanse of Torah. The wisdom to navigate these areas is there, waiting to be discovered.
Core values such as recognizing the uniqueness and infinite value of each person, finding your purpose, living to give, and approaching life's challenges with meaning, positivity, warmth, and joy, all of these can be derived from a single verse, word, or even a letter in the Torah.
Thousands of books delve into these real-life topics, drawing insights from the deep well of Torah wisdom.
These books form the extraordinary treasury of Chabad's Living Library.
Once one becomes aware of the existence of such profound wisdom, they’ll inevitably develop a thirst for more, which leads to the internalization of these teachings. This deep integration sparks a transformation that enriches life in ways previously unimaginable.
The "Chabad's Living Library" is a project of the Okanagan Chabad House.
The Library Space and Programs:
Our inclusive Library space serves as a hub for adults and families to reflect, connect, heal, and explore in a safe, welcoming environment. With hundreds of books available (and, in time, thousands more), the Library fosters growth and discovery for all who visit.
Beyond our welcoming space, our ongoing educational programming includes writing and art contests, thought-provoking presentations, hands-on projects, an interactive seasonal magazine, rewards for creativity and discovery, kosher café dinner dates, and much more.
Additionally, we plan to offer programs for children with special needs, as well as special weeks offering free bread for moms with children at home.
Books and reading are invaluable tools for education, personal growth, and spiritual connection. For children, books ignite imagination, foster a love of learning, and teach important values. For adults, reading provides intellectual stimulation, emotional enrichment, and a deeper understanding of life and our heritage.
Chabad's Living Library also features a comfortable lounge with free coffee, tea, and pastries, as well as board games and a delightful play area where children can enjoy themselves while parents unwind and relax.
We invite you to explore our new Library and discover the joy of Jewish living and learning.
