------------

I read this many years ago but it never registered as much as it did this week... Thanks to some fellow community members.

It reads as a mission statement of sorts for Chabad:
"What is a Chabad Chassid?" someone once asked Rabbi Shlom Ber Schneerson.
He replied, "A Chassid is like a street-lamp lighter."

In olden days, there was a person in every town who would light the street-lamps with a light he carried at the end of a long pole. On the street-corners, the lamps were there in readiness, waiting to be lit; sometimes, however, the lamps are not as easily accessible. There are lamps in forsaken places, in deserts, or at sea. There must be someone to light even those lamps, so that they may fulfill their purpose and light up the paths of others."

A Soul is a candle, Mitzvot and Torah are light. A Chassid is one who puts their personal affairs aside and sets out to light up the souls of fellow Jewish people with the light of Torah and Mitzvot. Jewish souls are ready and waiting to be kindled. Sometimes they are close, nearby; sometimes they are in a desert, or at sea. There must be someone who will forgo his or her own comforts and conveniences, and reach out to light those lamps.

In the 1960's, the Rebbe quoted this powerful statement, but with a broader vision: "This function is not really limited to Chassidim, but is the function of every Jewish person."

-------------------------------

This week Kelowna is shining with a unique glare, thanks to several individuals who are fanning out to neighbourhoods throughout the Valley, to serve as Lamplighters, taking part in Chabad Okanagan's Matzah Project as well as our Passover outreach and educational vision, by contributing financially, and by delivering Matzah to our people in person.

We have undertaken an audacious challenge, to gift a hand made Shmurah Matzah to every Jewish family in town. This will no doubt have a deep impact and reignite a spark in countless fellow community members.

We have already reached our people in Yukon, Oroville, Nelson, Kamloops, as well as the Valley from Osoyoos all the way up to Salmon Arm.
If you know someone who did not yet receive, and won't receive at the seder which they will be attending, please contact us right away and we will deliver a Pesach package to them next week G-d willing.

Recent studies have shown that seven out of ten american Jews sit down for a Seder on Passover night. It is our shared mission to be a lamplighter and inspire the other three to join in too!

P.S. Seeking more lamplighters. If you are able to partake in this momentous project, by undertaking to kindly deliver these Matzah gifts to a number of homes in your neighborhood at your own convenience (We'll provide the Matzah's and list), or you can contribute financially, please respond to this email.

Thank you for being a vital part of our vision, mission and success!

Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom!

We Light Shabbat Candles today in Kelowna, March, 31th at 7:11pm. Shabbat ends April 1st after 8:20pm.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Shmuly, Fraidy, Mushkah, Mendel, Yosef and Rochel

Passover is always a special time for charity and giving to the community.

As in past years, we launched our annual Passover appeal. Please help us raise $15,000 before the onset of Passover, so we can provide the necessary support to our community for Passover, and so that we can continue all of our critical outreach and educational work all year round!

Weekly Parshah

Parshat Vayikra

G‑d calls to Moses from the Tent of Meeting, and communicates to him the laws of the korbanot, the animal and meal offerings brought in the Sanctuary. These include:

• The “ascending offering” (olah) that is wholly raised to G‑d by the fire atop the altar;

• Five varieties of “meal offering” ( minchah) prepared with fine flour, olive oil and frankincense;

• The “peace offering”(shelamim), whose meat was eaten by the one bringing the offering, after parts are burned on the altar and parts are given to the kohanim (priests);

• The different types of “sin offering” (chatat) brought to atone for transgressions committed erroneously by the high priest, the entire community, the king or the ordinary Jew;

• The “guilt offering”(asham) brought by one who has misappropriated property of the Sanctuary, who is in doubt as to whether he transgressed a divine prohibition, or who has committed a “betrayal against G‑d” by swearing falsely to defraud a fellow man.
